Andile Mthembu, a young self-trained film producer from Richmond in rural KZN has joined the Global Latitude team with immediate effect as a film production and video intern.
While at school in Richmond, Andile took drama and developed a dream that he would one day be able to produce his own films. However, since Andile did not have the resources to attend film school and had no opportunities to work in the industry, he took employment at a local bed factory – Robertsons Bedding.
In his own time and with no funding, Andile produced is first film “Money makes the world go around”. Andile took multiple roles in the development of this film, including producer, director, script-writer, actor, cameraman and editor. He did all this with no training and no budget.
While chatting, factory owner Kim Robertson recognised Andile’s passion for film and video. Since Kim’s wife, Mandy, had a history in the film editing industry, he was able to loan Andile a better camera for his productions.
Andile has subsequently produced three more films “Ukuthwala kanzima”, “Isnyama” and “Imfihlo Iyovela”. Loosely translated from isiZulu, “Ukuthwala kanzima” means “Working hard”, “Isnyama” means “Bad luck” and “Imfihlo Iyovela” means “Secret revealed”. Andile is also working on releasing his fifth film, “When love hurts”, soon.
Global Latitude has been assisting Robertson’s Bedding with a new website, as well as various online and offline marketing campaigns including a full brand re-design. During one of our client meetings, Kim found out about the video side of our business and our newly launched African stock video agency, Africa Rising.
Kim spoke highly of Andile and his passion to gain more experience in the industry. When we heard Andile’s story, we immediately recognised a passionate and creative “entrepreneurial spirit”.
We have responded by making a position available for Andile to grow further with his passion and will be training him in traditional photography, more about videography, editing on the Apple platform with Final Cut X and, of course, stock video production.
In previous articles, we have written about the importance of video in marketing on the internet. By continuing to improve our skill set in this area and adding passionate team-members, we are growing our video production offering constantly, making it available to local and international partners and clients.
